Thank you for reading our third issue!
With
the release of the July 2003 issue of The Martialist, Independence Day has
come and gone. We hope you’ll agree that the wait was worthwhile, as
this edition of the ‘zine is full of great articles from a variety of
contributors.
Don’t forget that half of the magazine
is available for free, right here, every month. Just so you can
catch up, if you haven’t read the free content for our issues so far this
year, here are links to them:

In the column to the right you’ll see a link to this
month’s free content repeated. Below that is the listing of this
issue’s subscriber content. Each issue contains such a list
— so you can see what you’re missing. We hope that if you like what
you see for free online, you’ll be intrigued by the topics covered in our
subscriber mailing. To subscribe and receive these articles each
month via e-mail, click here.
This month’s subscriber content features
not one, but two articles by well-known e-budoka Harvey
Moul.
Harvey’s writing has a wry, dry feel to it that I quite enjoy. We
also have a truly excellent article on folding knives as fighting weapons
written by Don Rearic,
whose website is
one of the best “tactical” resources on the Web.
Our
Associate Editor, Lawrence Keeney, brings us a report from this year’s
popular Blade Show, attendance at which constitutes something of a
pilgrimage for knife enthusiasts. Branching out into the home repair
and improvement field, martial arts instructor David W. Pearson describes
how he built a homemade weapons rack for his living room. Finally,
we have several other informative articles from our contributors, as well
as a bonus from Robin “Brownie” Brown on his “Brownie
Popping” knife-opening technique.
The free content is equally worth the wait
this month, if you can forgive your editor a little
self-congratulation. For some time now in Combatives circles I
have heard the terms “Defendo,” “Defendu,” and “Combato”
used, with little understanding of what these are. I know there have
been some online disputes regarding who has rights to which terms, too, at
least in the past, though I have forgotten most of the details.
Recently, Robbie Cressman — representing Bill Underwood’s Defendo
— provided The Martialist with some input on Defendo
from his perspective.
We have another article this month from Rich Dimitri
of Senshido, a photographic self-defense progression from the
outspoken Tony Reyes, follow-ups
on our editorials on street people, and my almost obligatory Wing Chun
article (given that this is a style in which I believe strongly). We
are also extremely pleased to present an article from Gabe
Saurez and reviews of some instructional vidoes you may find
worthwhile.
Our goal at The Martialist is to
provide you with quality information, education, and entertainment —
material that will help you make choices about realistic self-defense.
You may not like everything you see, but that’s okay —
because I don’t agree with everything I publish from others, either.
(We encourage you to submit your own articles from different perspectives,
too.) As you will read many times in perusing our articles, the choice is yours.
Make it wisely.
