The folks at Delta2Alpha never stop innovating when it comes to unconventional, simple, and affordable self-defense tools. One of the extremely simple but why-didn’t-I-think-of-that products they’ve introduced is a length of synthetic rubber called the Hoodrat Snap Wrap. The idea is to buy a length of this innocuous synthetic material (which seems similar in composition to the stuff “Ranger Bands” are made of) and then use it to wrap the handle of literally any knife or tool for which you want a non-slip grip.
The brilliance of the material is that it “sticks” to itself. It isn’t sticky to the touch, but the material adheres to itself, which means with just a few loops (stretching the material as you go) you can loop it under itself and secure it (yet remove it any time you want).
The result is a non-stick grip wrap that can be fancy, as shown on the Delta2Alpha website…
…Or simple and dirty, such as the wrap I did on one of my fruit knives in order to bulk up the handle and make it less slippery.
The company includes tutorial videos on its website and YouTube channel that explain multiple methods for both fancy and simple wraps. Of course, Delta2Alpha also sells a number of cutting tools and throwing knives with slotted handles that make perfect platforms for the fancier versions of the Snap Wrap. You don’t have to have those, though, for this wrap to make good sense. I would recommend buying a few lengths of the material and keeping it on hand, especially for travel to Non-Permissive Environments (NPEs).
The company sells this material by the meter, so you can specify just how much you want. As of this writing, both black, coyote brown, olive green, and stone gray colors are available.
