Quick Look: Benchmade Advanced Folding Combat Knife
A Brief Evaluation by Phil Elmore
The
Benchmade AFCK is
a great tactical folder for both daily carry and expedient self-defense.
The black-coated, four-inch blade was very sharp out of the box and snaps open
smoothly and securely using the thumb hole. While earlier versions of the
knife had the licensed
Spyderco
round hole, later models have the oval hole shown. I find no perceivable
difference in the function of the two shapes (though to be honest I preferred
the round hole for aesthetic reasons only).
The linerlock is serrated for traction and has a low profile to prevent
accidental release. It engages completely at the left of the blade tang.
Handle ergonomics are very good. The thoroughly checkered synthetic
handle provides a firm grip. The deep index finger scallop serves as a
minimal guard.
The
knife is designed for tip-down carry only, which I prefer as more safe than
“tip-up” carry. The metal pocket clip is secured with Torx
screws and can be removed but not reversed. The body of the knife is also
held together with Torx screws. There is a lanyard hole near the end of
the handle.
Black coating on the blade and the pocket clip make this a discreet folder,
though it is not small and will still raise eyebrows among the uninitiated.
There are less expensive knives on the market and there are more expensive
knives on the market. The AFCK remains one of the better choices available
for a “using” knife, though, well-designed for both utility and martial
applications.
