Quick Look: Schrade X-Timer

The
Schrade
X-timer caught me by surprise as I was shopping for Yule gifts in 2002.
Wandering the aisles of Wal*Mart, I found these knives clamshell-packed and
hanging from a shelf.
With a three and a half inch black-coated blade, thumb disk, and
pocket clip, the knife is obviously intended as a tactical folder. The
handle swells to a very minimal guard and has a lanyard hole at the end.
As
it is a rocker-bar lockback, I was inclined to trust the X-timer more than a
Schrade linerlock. (To be honest, Schrade’s linerlocks have never been to
my liking, particularly on the “Cliphanger.”) I bought two
X-timers and discovered that one had a little blade play (up and down) when
open. The other was nice and solid.
The aluminum handle slabs are cross-hatched and very “grippy.”
The removable metal clip is configured for “tip-down” carry, which is
what I prefer.
If you’re looking for a reasonably inexpensive, locking,
pocket-clip folder and you find yourself close to a Wal*Mart, check for the
X-timer.
It’s worth examining.
