Ka-Bar TDI

The TDI Law Enforcement Knife by Ka-Bar is an attempt to apply the “pistol grip” concept to a knife in order to cut down on gross motor confusion when transitioning from a weapon to a back-up weapon.  It is quite popular in various tactical and training circles; I have seen it worn by many people in various knife-and-gun classes I have attended.  Since the introduction of this original TDI knife, Ka-Bar has expanded the line to include different blade styles and different sizes.

The basic TDI has handles of mildly textured Zytel, which incorporate multiple shallow grooves and an index finger contour for a sure grip.  The 2-5/16 inch AUS-8A blade is black powder coated, ground on both sides. It was nicely sharp out of the box and cuts very well for a small knife. with a little belly to help with slashing and a fairly broad but very sharp tip.  Overall length is 5-5/8 inches.

The issue sheath is of plastic and could be worn on a relatively narrow belt. The slots could also be used to mount a Tek-Lok or other carry system.  I was not satisfied with the sheath, however, so I obtained a J-clip IWB (inside the waistband) sheath from Shawn’s Tactical.  Either sheath allows the user to draw the knife quickly from its friction fit, bringing it to bear with gross motor movements using the “pistol” grip.

Even if you have large hands or are wearing gloves, the handle of the TDI provides a decent grip.  This is a great backup knife package that could serve as primary carry for those who don’t, won’t, or can’t carry a firearm. It’s concealable, it’s simple, and it’s easy to deploy.
